3 key learnings to set up a successful planning transformation journey

When thinking about making a vision of a ‘phygital’ world real, it is important to choose your battles and decide for your own company which gamechangers your company will and can dive into in order to make your supply chain ready for the next generation. Planning transformation journeys is one of them.

It is a fact that setting up and going through a planning transformation journey is quite a challenge. BMS, Johnson & Johnson and Novo Nordisk can confirm this, as they are going through one (or have been going through one) as we speak. A couple of weeks ago, they shared their thoughts & experiences during an intensive roundtable discussion at our ‘phygital’ event.

It became very clear that every transformation has its own story and its own challenges. However, alongside the traditional challenges on master data and change management, what are the key learnings they have shared with us for setting up a planning transformation journey successfully?

1. Engage your non-planning stakeholders as much as your planning community

“Production should focus on their core capability, which is producing as well as production efficiency, and that is why we have agreed -together with our stakeholders- to make sure that on every single site all of our schedulers are part of our global planning organization” (Linda Coppens, Director JSC Inventory Management at Johnson & Johnson)


2. Work organization-process-system, not system-process-organization

“We really focused on the right people executing the right process. It started with the perfect tools but now it is all about how we get the technology to underpin this to make it efficient. Focus on people, change management is very critical. 3. Define what agile means for your company and for your planning transformation

“Being agile is the biggest thing you can do. When you run projects, you need to run them in an agile manner. But being agile is not good everywhere. There are certain parts or certain phases of your transformation journey where it is good, such as the design or organizational phase. So, being agile brings a lot of value, but it’s up to you to choose in which phases it suits you best.” (Daniel Frederiksen, Business Transformation Lead at Novo Nordisk)
